El Salvador

Bienvenido / Welcome!

El Salvador, officially the Republic of El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America.  For centuries it was inhabited by several Mesoamerican nations, especially Maya. In the early 16th century, the Spanish Empire conquered the territory, until achieving independence in 1821.  The population of El Salvador is estimated at 6.38 million, consisting largely of Mestizos of European and Indigenous American descent.

El Salvador's economy was historically dominated by agriculture, beginning with the indigo plant - the most important crop during the colonial period - followed by coffee, which by the early 20th century accounted for 90 percent of export earnings. Now the manufacturing sector has created a more diverse economy.

El Salvador has tropical climate, with pronounced wet and dry seasons.  In such a small area, the country is big on natural wonders, surrounded by stunning landscapes, with smoking volcanoes, surf-pounded beaches, pristine cloud forests and crystalline lagoons. It also has magnificent, crowd-free national parks, rivers to do whitewater rafting, and lazy boat rides across volcanic crater lakes like Ilopango and Coatepeque. Surfers flock to the world-class Pacific breakers at Sonsonate, El Zonte and La Unión.

The archaeological remains at Tazumal mark the furthest outpost of the Maya empire; the Ruta de Las Flores features colourful, flower-filled villages, with volcanic hot springs and indigenous craft markets.  The cities and small villages are filled with post-colonial infrastructure and modern shopping centres.

But El Salvador’s most important jewel is its people, who are hard workers and ever friendly, with a very welcoming spirit.
